30 people hurt after train derails near 125th St !

 

 

Today, a south bound A train derailed between 125th st and 138th st due to the trains emergency brake system accidentally locking. Over 30 people were injured. The abrupt stoppage of the train sent 2 cars off rail and into a wall on 125th st resulting in one of the doors actually tearing off.

The terrifying incident occurred at about 9:48 a.m.. Train riders recall being thrown from their seats with flickering lights and sparks of up to 5ft looking through the window. According to reports, A photographer 48, Kelly Kopp rode the 2nd to last car on that rain. “People were throwing up, people were screaming. I thought I was caught in some fire” says Kelly.

 

Another commuter Skip Suva, 28 says “he was leaning on the left side of the door on the left side of the train and the right door was ripped open” He also told Gothamist “It was really dark, tons of smoke and dust, and white chunky things”.

 

 

Carrie Courigan another rider said that people were desperate to escape and even tried to pry open doors and windows because for up to 10 minutes  there was no communication from the conductor with smoke building up in the train cars. Eventually she announced that there was a derailment and they (conductors) will be coming thru the cars.

By 12:30 p.m. 34 people had been reported to have had injuries but fortunately none that were life threatening.

17 people out of that 34 were treated at Harlem hospital and New York Presbyterian.

In total 1300 people had to be evacuated from 7 trains that were stuck in tunnels near by according to sources.

500 of those people had to be brought to safety by walking on the tracks to safety but not before the power having to be shut off for third rail safety.

NOW WHAT

A lawmaker from Queens is petitioning Governor Andrew Cuomo to stay in Albany until the new MTA plan is secure to fix the horrible train issues of New York City.
